Why glass cleaner can't touch them
Hard-water spots are the calcium and magnesium minerals left behind when a droplet evaporates on the glass; they bond to the silica surface as a thin scale. An ordinary glass cleaner is a surfactant — it lifts oils, dust and fingerprints, not mineral scale — so it wipes and wipes and the rings stay. To actually remove them you need either a mild acid to dissolve the mineral, or a fine abrasive to grind it off.
The safe escalation (least aggressive first)
- Light, recent spots: a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and distilled water is a weak acid — spray, dwell a few minutes, agitate with a microfibre and rinse.
- Bonded spots that won't wipe: step up to a dedicated acidic water-spot / mineral remover (pH 1–2). Work on cool glass in the shade, keep it moving, and rinse before it dries.
- Still there: clay the glass with plenty of lubricant to pull off any remaining bonded specks.
- Etched (you can feel a crater with a fingernail): only a cerium-oxide glass polish, worked by hand or machine, physically levels etched spots.

- Never freehand steel wool or a razor on curved/tempered glass or over a rain repellent — it hazes and micro-scratches the surface.
