What the oil film actually is

The greasy, smeary layer on a windshield is not the glass — it is a bonded film of silicone and oils (from waxes, traffic film, exhaust and worn-out rain repellents) combined with baked-on minerals from hard water. Because it is bonded, a normal glass cleaner wipes the surface but leaves the film behind, which is why wipers chatter and headlights glare through it at night.

How to remove it

Work on cool, shaded glass. Wash first, then apply a glass polish or oil-film remover to a damp pad or microfibre and rub firmly in overlapping circles over a small section at a time — by hand for maintenance, or with a machine and a glass polishing pad for heavy film.
